Servers coming back online soon! | |

Edit: As of October 5th, the worlds are now back online!
Last night we got a late email from one of the guys at Netelligent who informed us that they pulled a few strings to get us up and going at the end of Friday night instead of waiting until Monday.
After a few hours last night and the same today, I'm excited to announce we'll be coming back up quite soon! I would have announced it sooner but I feared getting your hopes up yet again only to meet with more issues.
Now, things are a bit different in term of where you connect:
If you're logged into West, you can try west.layonara.com to connect, if that doesn't work yet, you can use the IP which is 64.15.70.106, the password is the same.
If you're logged into Central, you will now need to specify the server port. So you can go central.layonara.com:5122 (for the pedantic, yes I know west and central resolve to the same IPs now, so it doesn't matter the server name). If that does not work, then you can specify the IP, but make sure to include the port: 64.15.70.106:5122.
Nothing else has changed with one exception. We've turned on autoportalling again between servers. We once had an issue of that crashing a server, and we want to see if our new setup will fix that. We're hoping so. So when you take a cross server portal, it won't boot you and you'll need to relogin to the destination server, instead it will interconnect you to the other server automatically. This may be temporary though if we discover it still crashes us.
I'm not positive how this setup will endure the traffic yet, so lets hope things are fairly smooth. I see no reason why they wouldn't be. One other concern I have is with the speech recognition system, since its now processing for both west and central simultaneously. Anyway, we'll see how these issues go but everything appears to be good now.
I will followup in this thread when the servers are back online and ready. Could be anywhere from 1 to 3 hours.
Cheers,
orth

Hello everyone,
As updated in the thread last night, the game worlds will be back. We've decided to secure our own windows server hosted by the same company who hosts our forums and irc. The other deal Dan hinted at did not come to pass, but it was important for us to consider all possibilities to continue having the nwn experience of Layonara. If it matters, I'll be personally eating the costs but I have extra support from the whole Layonara Studios board should I need some help in the situation.
Our hosting providers have indicated the server should be ready as early as tomorrow morning, and no later then Friday afternoon. Since we're going to be running both West and Central off one server, its going to take some time to configure the machine's dual processors and to handle some of our custom extensions.
The servervault, the dbs and the modules are all waiting now in Montreal on the forum server. Leanthar has spent most of today uploading the information so when the new server comes up, we'll be able to move the files over swiftly.
If we run into major issues with running both servers on one machine, it may be necessary for us to temporarily run West only until we work out the glitches.
With all this information said, I expect the game worlds to be back up by the end of the weekend. If not both of them then at least West. Those of you currently logged into Central we'd tweak the db for in the event that that is necessary.
Thank you all for being patient and understanding during this downtime.
Love,
orth

UPDATE - 9/30/2008 @ 5:45PM PACIFIC (by orth) The NWN game worlds will be back. Details will follow in a day or two. Timeline is a bit sketchy, but most likely within a week or two. Thank you all for your patience and understanding once again.

UPDATE - 9/29/2008 @ 9:52AM PACIFIC (by Dorganath)
Leanthar wanted me to inform everyone that the servers will be going down in 20-30 minutes from right now. Thank you all for your understanding during this time.

UPDATE - 9/28/2008 @ 5:30PM PACIFIC
As of this time I still do not have the needed signatures. The game worlds still have to come down as planned and talked about below. I will bring them back online when (if) I get the signatures. Keep your fingers crossed.
==================================================
Hello Everybody,
I hope you and your familes are doing well.
This post is just a heads up with what is happening with the game servers at this time. My hosting company (GNI) has increased the costs of hosting and providing bandwidth for the game servers by 350% starting on October 1st. Since donations has been less than 30% of the costs that I pay them for hosting for seven years now it is clear that I will never come close to getting enough donations with a 350% increase in my costs. As such I will be bringing the game world servers down on Monday, September 29th. I am not sure at what time this will happen but it will be some time between 9am and noon Pacific.
I think I have found another location for the servers but a few signatures still need to be penned and as such it is not 100% at this time. If I am able to get the signatures by the end of this weekend the game servers will come back online in a new location within 48 hours of coming offline. That is the hope and plan at least. I give no promises on how long it will take or if I will be successful in gaining the needed signatures. If I do not gain the signatures then chances are very high the servers will not come back online at all. But I do think I will be able to get those signatures, even if it takes longer than past this weekend; which it could.
Once the game servers are back online all of the IP addresses will have changed so if you are using the actual IP address to play on the game world you will not be able to get to the servers when they are back online. I do not think anybody does this any more, but if you do this is the heads up. You will still be able to use the server names to gain access (such as west.layonara.com) but since we will have changed IP addresses it also means we need to update DNS to the world. The update process will usually happen within 24 hours (across the world) but some times it takes up to 72 hours. If you are not able to find the server during that time it is highly likely that DNS has not been updated for your ISP yet, but it will happen. I am hopeful that all players will be able to connect and play on the game servers by Wednessday, October 1st, noon Pacific; again though, I can give no promises. There is a possibility that they will be back online Monday night or Tuesday morning, but I am not sure how possible that is at this time.
I will keep everybody up to date via posts on the forum. The forum and IRC will remain online as they are hosted at another location entirely. This affects only the game servers.
I am sorry for the short notice but this was sprung on me 36 hours ago and I have been trying to work with them for a solution but it is clear they have no interest what-so-ever of working with us on a solution. I gave up on the process this morning after thinking about things last night.
Keep your fingers crossed.

Jul 18, 2008 - 7:08 AM - by Leanthar |
In our opinion music is core to the acceptance of any game within any genre. It is very important that the music fits the game-play, game-style, as well as the world. We were very lucky to find Jason (Eon Blue). He has immense talent and a deep dedication to the creation of quality music for all to enjoy.
Here are three tracks that he has created for Layonara. Enjoy! http://layonara.com/share/music/Track1_Main.mp3 http://layonara.com/share/music/Track2_Choir.mp3 http://layonara.com/share/music/Track3_D_Ambience.mp3 A little about Jason:
Music has been a passion of mine since I was little. Growing up in rural Ohio I didn't have many musical outlets available to me and spent most of my time annoying my parents with guitar noise and imagining I was a rock star. The more I listened to music, the more I wanted to advance beyond the three chord guitar rock and learn everything I could. I quickly found out that there is a whole lot to learn! I've had many personal teachers, read more books than I could count, completed a two year course through Berklee College of Music, and still feel I'm in the 'hobby' stages. But I've loved every minute of it.
The last few years have seen a huge explosion in music technology making it possible for an average person to create and record music that was previously available to only a select few. Ten years ago, in order to create an orchestral soundtrack you had to have access to an orchestra and recording studio. Now it just takes a computer and a couple pieces of software. It's an incredible feeling to sit down at your computer, write a few notes, and immediately hear an entire symphony play them.
In my case, it's allowed me to combine my passion for video games with my passion for music and led me to work with the layonara team. I'm very thankful for being given the opportunity to be involved with this project. It's been a blessing to work with so many talented individuals. I think the end result is going to blow everyone's socks off!
